How Chinese medicine works for skin diseases
Chinese herbal medicine has been used to address skin diseases for more than two thousand years. Treatment is not intended to subdue the symptoms, rather to create a complete shift in the body’s internal environment, so that the disease is either completely eradicated, or kept under control on its own. The outcomes often can include complete clearing of skin and internal symptoms. Unlike conventional medicine, we recognize that inflammation is only one aspect of the disease. Other important aspects include impaired blood flow and malnourishment of the whole body and skin. With herbal medicine the goal is to clear inflammation and restore normal physiological functions necessary for healthy and well-nourished skin.
Western dermatology vs. Chinese medicine dermatology
Conventional treatment of skin diseases often addresses only the inflammatory aspect of the disease, which creates dependency on continuous management of symptoms with pharmaceuticals. We use Chinese herbal medicine to treat both the inflammation and the root cause of skin diseases. Conventional treatment options such as antibiotics, biologics, oral and topical steroids have known side-effects, ranging from skin atrophy to increased risk of infection and cancer. Chinese herbal medicine is much safer, and in many cases more effective than conventional treatment options. More importantly, with herbal medicine we can achieve a much deeper level of healing resulting in a lasting recovery and requiring minimal maintenance.
Your treatment plan
The length of treatment with Chinese herbal medicine is 4 to 6 months, with the first noticeable progress after the first 4-8 weeks of treatment. During the initial one hour long assessment visit, we review your health history, take photos of skin lesions and chart out the treatment plan. The medicine consists of liquid herbal preparations to be taken by mouth, and made specifically for each patient’s unique set of symptoms, as well topical herbal products to support the healing of skin externally in the initial stages of treatment. A follow up visit is required every three to four weeks.
